Biodiversity Advisor (KNE)


Greater Wellington Regional Council is looking for an experienced Biodiversity Advisor to join our team.

The role of the Biodiversity team is to provide a coordinated approach to delivering biodiversity outcomes to the Greater Wellington region, in line with statutory documents and the Department's Operational Plan.

In this position you will be responsible for preparing management plans for some of Wellington Region's Key Native Ecosystems (KNE) in collaboration with other GWRC departments, land owners and community groups. You will also coordinate and review the delivery of these management plans in line with the allocated budget.

The role is based in the Wellington office.


To be successful in this position you will have

  • An applicable tertiary qualification (ecology, or other relevant biological sciences).
  • A minimum of two years' experience in ecological restoration including a sound understanding of biodiversity management approaches required to meet specified outcomes
  • Experience in identifying indigenous flora and fauna.
  • Skills and experience in project management, coordinating programmes and/or resources.
  • Ability to plan, implement and monitor programmes within budget.
  • Ability to write restoration management plans to a high standard.
  • Knowledge of the Resource Management Act and understanding of the council's role.
  • Experience in dealing with external parties such as community groups, iwi, contract workers and landowners.
