Emergency Management Advisor

Interested in making your Wellington region safer and more prepared to respond to an emergency? Civil Defence Emergency Management serves communities across nine cities and districts of the Wellington region. 

To complement the talents of the current team, we are looking for the following:

An individual who is passionate about service to our community and emergency preparedness.  This is an Emergency Management position that involves developing capability across people, infrastructure, systems, plans and processes.  You possess outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to seek out opportunities to work with stakeholders to enhance operational readiness. You will have the opportunity to create meaningful outcomes in operational response mechanisms and to energise operational readiness networks and relationships across the Wellington region. 

This requires someone with the initiative to create opportunities, not wait for them to be presented.  You are an innovative and a lateral thinker and, if required, work under pressure in an operational setting as a response manager. One of your strengths is enabling others to succeed.  This is the rare job that allows you to make a real difference in the Wellington region preparedness for an emergency.

As part of the Operational Readiness Team, you will be home based in our Lower Hutt office with shared work in the Wellington CBD.  This is a permanent full time position with shared use of a vehicle.

• Have practical experience in risk management, capability building, maintaining operational readiness, relationship building and operating in high tempo operational environments;
• Understand the emergency management environment;
• Enjoy working with and supporting people to realise their ideas and respect different ideas and perspectives;
• Have the courage to do the right thing and the personal resilience to work autonomously within response settings;
• Have experience in working in teams and building effective working relationships;
• Possess strong facilitation, negotiation, presentation and advocacy  skills;
• Are positive and focused on innovative solutions; and
• Possess a willingness and energy to go the extra distance in support of team/community outcomes which underpins all our actions and motivations.

This role requires self-management, initiative and the ability to seek out and create success in often challenging and ambiguous environments.
