Job Description

Greater Wellington Regional Council has two exciting positions available for intermediate-level engineers in our Masterton Office. One permanent role will broadly support the work of our Department in the Wairarapa through involvement in the investigations, planning, development and operation of our river management schemes. The other position is fixed term for two years and is focussed on developing our Floodplain Management Plans (FMPs) as part of a project team.

If you are passionate about making a difference by working with our rivers, and would like to take advantage of the lifestyle options the Wairarapa offers, then we would love to hear from you.

The Flood Protection Department is tasked with region-wide responsibility for Greater Wellington's river and flood risk management.  This is to ensure the best possible protection from the consequences of flooding and erosion for communities in the region (given available resources), to manage the river environments to provide attractive places for recreation and to take care of our river ecosystems.

To be successful in either of these positions you will have:

  • A tertiary engineering qualification (for the Floodplain Management Plan fixed term position, we may consider applicants with a relevant non-engineering tertiary qualification)
  • Relevant practical experience in river, catchment, or drainage engineering; related civil fields; or  flood risk management: a minimum of 5 years relevant working experience
  • A high level of computer literacy. Familiarity with hydrology, hydraulic, GIS and management related software is preferable
  • Good oral and written communication skills, at both the professional technical level, and with the general public
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work without close supervision

To apply for either of these positions please view the job descriptions and apply via the link below with a CV and cover letter. Please state in your application which role or roles you are interested in.

For further information on the roles please contact:

  • Kereana Sims, Section Leader, Operations Delivery (Wairarapa) on 06 826 1593 for the Operations Delivery position or
