We are looking for an experienced Enforcement Officer; investigator or compliance practitioner to join our Wellington based Environmental Protection Team. Appointment can be made into the Senior Role to the right candidate dependent on previous relevant experience and capability.

You will be part of a dynamic, outcomes focused team who carry out inspections, investigations and assess compliance with the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA).  Our work includes carrying out follow-up education, advice and enforcement as required.  Your time will be divided between responding to incidents, following up your own investigations, assisting with the investigations of other officers. 

To succeed in this role you will have:

  • Expertise and experience in investigations and enforcement
  • Excellent interpersonal, engagement and relationship management skills
  • An ability to remain focussed on outcomes rather than process
  • An understanding of how to influence behaviour change
  • Confidence in making informed decisions and applying sound reasoning and judgement
  • An eye for critical detail, risk analysis and an ability to present complex information orally and in writing


Key skills to demonstrate are:

  • A collaborative working style, with experience mentoring and sharing your ideas & expertise with others
  • A broad perspective on environmental issues which may come from the breadth and depth of your experience; may include experience working with councils, central government, private practice/consulting firms, community groups, iwi or volunteers
  • A track record of practical regulation, implementation of legislation and delivering to customers
  • The ability to get into the work quickly, manage a varied portfolio of work and work when required under pressure
