Greater Wellington Regional Council is responsible for providing a safe navigating environment in the region's harbours and coastal waters. We operate Wellington Harbour Radio from Beacon Hill signal station in Seatoun and now have an opportunity for a casual Harbour Communications Officer to join our team.

The station operates a 24/7 service with one person on duty at all times and this casual role is to provide ad hoc coverage when permanent staff are unavailable. The job involves monitoring and communicating with shipping, marine services, recreational users and the public on and around Wellington Harbour via marine VHF radio and phone. A continuous watch is kept visually, electronically and by radio. You will need to be a clear, confident communicator. As the position involves working alone, you must be self-reliant and motivated.

Ideally you will have:-

  • a maritime qualification such as Seconds Mates (FG)
  • an offshore Watchkeepers' Certificate or similar
  • Familiarity with Wellington Harbour and Cook Strait would be an advantage.
