We're looking for a Field Operator to join our team in Upper Hutt. You'll need to be passionate about the great outdoors and protecting our primary industry and environment.

BioWorks is a field-based team within the Greater Wellington Regional Council Biosecurity Department. The main focus is on the delivery of the Regional Possum Predator Control Programme, aimed at maintaining the benefits of low possum numbers in areas that were under long term bovine Tb vector control and have since been declared Tb free.

About the role

Field Operators are required to carry out a variety of duties to reduce possum and mustelid populations, using poisons and traps. 80% of their time is in the field so a love of the outdoors is key. Confidence and ability in riding a two wheeled motorcycle on rough and varied terrain is also key.

You may occasionally be required to undertake overtime or stay away overnight. Staying away requires staff to live in Council rented accommodation from Monday to Thursday night for periods of two to twelve weeks.

Skills and experience required:

  • Physically fit and able to walk long distances with a full pack.
  • An ability to navigate through bush, farmland environments and uneven terrain.
  • Happy to work in all weather conditions.
  • Lots of initiative and able to work with little or no supervision.
  • A full car licence,
  • An ability to ride a motorcycle off road
  • Great communication skills
  • Good reading and writing skills and some ability with the use of Microsoft Office
  • Flexible and a real team player

It would also be great if you have the following:

  • Some knowledge of pest animal control (possum or mustelid)
  • Experience using a GPS – but training can be provided
  • Able to obtain a Controlled Substance License or hold a relevant controlled substance license
  • Be prepared to undertake industry training to obtain the Primary ITO Pest Animal Operations qualification (level 3), if it is not already held
