We're looking for an enthusiastic and progressive Senior Field Operator to join our BioWorks team. You will love working outdoors and will plan and supervise a small team of field staff. This role is a permanent, full-time role, based in Masterton.

About the role

BioWorks is a field-based team within the Greater Wellington Biosecurity Department. Our focus is on the delivery of the Regional Possum Predator Control Programme which controls possums and other predators that threaten our native biodiversity and economy.

Pest control will include using a range of poison and trapping methods to reduce possum and mustelid populations. In this role you will spend most of your time in the field so a love of the outdoors in all weather is key. Confidence and ability in riding a two wheeled motorcycle off on rough and varied terrain is required.

You will get into interesting landscape places that aren't available to the public, in remote parts of the Wairarapa. You need to be a real team player, sometimes working overtime or staying away overnight for periods of two to twelve weeks at a time

Skills and experience required:

  • Previous experience managing and supervising field staff or ready to step up into a senior role.
  • Able to ride off road – a motorcycle licence would be advantageous.
  • Lots of initiative and able to work without supervision, great communication skills with a ‘can-do' attitude.
  • Physically fit and able to navigate through bush, farmland environments and uneven terrain with a full pack, in all weather conditions.
  • Knowledge in pest animal control (possum and mustelid) is preferred.
  • A full car licence.
  • Good reading and writing skills and the ability to use Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge and experience using a GPS preferably with working experience of Arc-view GIS software.
  • Be able to obtain a Controlled Substance License or hold a relevant controlled substance license, requiring a Police check.
  • Preferably completed the Primary ITO Pest Animal Operations qualification (level 3) and willing to undertake higher level qualifications.
  • Flexible and a genuine team player, leading the way and willing to help others
  • Pre-employment medical testing required.

What we offer:

We're all about growing our people through professional development and experience across everything the council does, and we provide a range of benefits that help our staff balance their own lifestyle and work commitments: -

  • Generous leave allowance
  • Medical and trauma insurance
  • Ongoing training and development opportunities
  • Subsidised social club
  • Comprehensive uniform provided

Located in our beautiful Greater Wellington region, offering real work-life balance working close to home.
