We're looking for an enthusiastic Field Operator to join our BioWorks team. This role may suit someone new to the workforce who loves the outdoors and is keen to gain experience protecting our primary industry from possums and other predators. Based in either Masterton or Upper Hutt, this role is fixed term for approximately nine months.

About the role

BioWorks is a field-based team within the GW Biosecurity Department. The main focus is on the delivery of the Regional Possum Predator Control Programme that controls possums and other predators that threaten our native biodiversity and economy.

As a Field Operator you'll carry out pest-control to reduce possum and mustelid populations, using a mix of poisons and traps. Most of your time will be in the field, so a love of the outdoors in all weather is key. Confidence and ability in riding a two wheeled motorcycle on rough and varied terrain is required.

You will get to access interesting and remote areas of the Greater Wellington landscape that aren't available to the public. You need to be a real team player, sometimes working overtime or staying away overnight for periods of two to twelve weeks at a time.

Skills and experience required:

  • Flexible and a genuine team player, willing to help others.
  • Able to ride off road – a motorcycle licence would be an advantage.
  • Physically fit and able to navigate through bush, farmland environments and uneven terrain with a full pack, in all weather conditions.
  • Lots of initiative, great communication skills and a ‘can-do' attitude.
  • Full car licence.
  • Good reading and writing skills and some ability with the use of Microsoft Office.
  • Some knowledge in pest animal control (possum or mustelid) would be useful (but not essential)
  • Experience using a GPS would be an advantage.
  • Be able to obtain a Controlled Substance License or hold a relevant controlled substance license, including Police checks.  Keen to undertake industry training to obtain qualifications.
  • Pre-employment medical testing.
