We are looking for a GIS Specialist to join our dedicated and friendly ICT (Information and Communication Technology) Team. This role is permanent and full-time, based in our central Wellington office.

About the role:

We are looking for a specialist who is known as an excellent communicator. Someone who has the communication skills to ensure our stakeholders are excited about the possibilities that the data provides as you are. The successful candidate will ensure that our digital library of geographic maps is well managed and maintained.  They will also need to ensure GW's geospatial data is able to meet a wide and growing variety of needs of our customers.

The GIS Specialist is a part of the Data & Information Management Team. Along with the other members of the GIS team, the GIS Specialist is responsible for providing support and shares responsibility on development of specific projects, developing mapping applications and tools, and delivering support & training to enable users of the data to derive the best value from GIS data sets.

To be successful in the role you will relish the opportunity to work as part of a dynamic team.  The team will ensure that they manage GW's digital library of geographic maps, providing geospatial data analysis, developing mapping applications and tools, and delivering support & training to enable users of the data to derive the best value from GIS data sets.

Skills and experience required:

  • Tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Geography, Surveying, Engineering or related field and/or demonstrable competency in geospatial data analysis work in similar sized organisations. 
  • Proficient with database programming languages such as SQL, R or Python. 
  • Proven experience with mapping tools such as QGIS / Carto and GPS measuring tools within similar sized organisations. 
  • Strong quantitative skill set and an analytical mindset. 
  • Demonstrable attention to detail and good problem-solving skills. 
  • Good interpersonal skills. 
  • Capable written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write documents that are clear, concise and in plain language.
