Water quality of Lower Owhiro Stream

In April 1998 Wellington Regional Council met with the Owhiro Bay
Residents Association. The Association was concerned about the
influence of sewage overflows from the Landfill Road area on the quality of
Owhiro Stream water. The association was particularly interested in
microbial levels and perpyton or algal slime growths, which may have
increased as a result of the overflows.
In response to this request for information, Wellington Regional Council
undertook a water quality study in the area tested for bacteria (faecal
coliforms), nutrients (dissolved reaction phosphorus (DRP), dissolved
inorganic nitrogen (DIN)) and periphyton.
This report outlines the background, methods, results and conclusions
drawn from this study.
