Native and exotic forests cover the hill country between Upper Hutt,
Pauatahanui and Paraparaumu. This vast back country area is managed
for multiple purposes – timber production, maintenance of water quality,
soil protection and recreation. Several rivers have the potential for meeting
future water supply needs.

There is an extensive network of tracks and old logging roads in the
Akatarawa Forest used daily for forest management purposes. They also
provide access for a range of recreation activities. Most of the tracks are
suitable for mountain biking and offer an exciting array of terrain and
scenery.
