Other organisations' pest control
As well as our operations, Department of Conservation, OSPRI, local councils, landowners and the community are all involved in pest control.
This can make it quite confusing to figure out what precautions you need to take in your local park before you visit, so we recommend always checking any signage that might be erected a park entrances. This will let you know what is happening in that location, who is leading the work, and how to stay safe with your family and your pets.
Pest animal control – August 2025 to June 2026
Supplejack Contracting will be carrying out pest animal control in parts of Kaitoke and Pākuratahi Regional Parks from early August 2025 to June 2026.
This work is part of OSPRI’s TB Free programme and focuses on reducing possum numbers, which can carry bovine tuberculosis. It also helps native plants and birds to thrive - including kiwi, which are already returning to nearby areas.
Control methods being used include:
- Traps
- Bait stations with the toxins Feratox and Brodifacoum
Dog walking restrictions:
Until further notice, dogs must be kept on a leash at all times in the affected areas.
Safety reminders when visiting the park:
- Keep your dog on a leash
- Don’t let dogs scavenge carcasses
- Don’t touch carcasses or bait stations
- Follow all signs and instructions
