About the role
We’re seeking an experienced governance professional to join its Finance, Risk and Audit Committee (FRAC) as an External Member.
FRAC plays a critical role in supporting Council oversight and accountability. The Committee oversees, reviews and reports to Council on the effectiveness of Greater Wellington’s frameworks for financial management, risk management, internal controls and audit.
As an external member, you will bring an objective, external perspective to committee deliberations, providing constructive challenge, professional insight and support to the Chair and other members. This role is central to maintaining public trust and confidence in Greater Wellington’s financial stewardship and governance.
About the Finance, Risk and Audit Committee
The Finance, Risk and Audit Committee supports Council by:
- Reviewing financial performance, budgets and financial reporting
- Overseeing risk management frameworks and key strategic and operational risks
- Monitoring the effectiveness of internal controls and assurance activities
- Overseeing internal and external audit programmes, findings and management responses
- Providing advice and assurance to Council on governance, financial and risk matters
The Committee operates at a governance level and does not have operational decision-making responsibilities.
FRAC meets five times each year, with additional engagement as required to support effective oversight.

What we are looking for
We are seeking an external member with the experience and confidence to operate effectively at a senior governance level. Read the full job description. (PDF 142 KB)
You will be able to demonstrate:
- Senior experience in audit and risk governance, including service on audit, risk or equivalent committees
- A strong financial background with Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand membership or an internationally recognised equivalent being beneficial
- Experience working within, or closely with, the local government or public sector, with an understanding of accountability, regulatory and funding environments
- The ability to provide independent, objective judgement, including constructive challenge and professional scepticism
- A sound understanding of frameworks for financial management, risk management, audit and internal controls
- Experience reviewing and assessing organisational insurance arrangements
- Understanding of internal and external audit processes, including engagement with auditors and oversight of audit findings
- The ability to contribute insights that support organisational performance, efficiency and wider community outcomes
- An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and experience supporting governance frameworks that strengthen relationships with mana whenua
Time commitment and term
This is a part-time, non-permanent governance appointment.
The external Member will be expected to:
- Attend five in-person FRAC meetings each year
- Participate in quarterly meetings with key stakeholders and management outside formal committee meetings
- Devote sufficient preparation and engagement time to effectively fulfil the role
The appointment is for a three-year term.
Remuneration
Remuneration is provided in accordance with Council policy for appointed committee members.
