Stormwater is generated from rainfall runoff and commonly enters a network which discharge into the fresh and coastal water environment. Wastewater can also enter the stormwater network during heavy rainfall. Urban development activities increase the extent of impervious areas in a catchment resulting in increased stormwater flow volumes and contaminants from roads, roofs, and paved areas. Stormwater discharges can cause negative effects on aquatic ecosystems, human health, mauri, people’s enjoyment of the areas, the suitability of water for recreation and shellfish gathering.
There are two main types of resource consents for stormwater discharges:
- Stormwater from new subdivision and development, new or redeveloped state highways network, and existing ports and airports
- Stormwater from a City or District Council network
Our compliance team monitor all stormwater consents. Stormwater discharges from City or District Council networks are monitored regularly throughout the year, whilst other stormwater discharges are monitored less frequently.
